The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has called for collective action and self-defence measures to combat escalating insecurity in Northern Nigeria.
Speaking at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Kaduna, ACF Chairman Mamman Mike Osuman (SAN) lamented the prevalence of kidnappings, killings, and attacks, describing the situation as a national crisis demanding urgent intervention.
Osuman stressed that insecurity had not only destabilised the region but also questioned the purpose of government itself.
“It is imperative for leaders, stakeholders, and citizens to unite against these challenges to secure a prosperous future for all,” he said.
Highlighting the threats posed by bandits, terrorists, and kidnappers, Osuman emphasised the need for public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the importance of self-defence.
He also urged governors and legislators to collaborate with traditional leaders to curb internal crimes and address illegal mining, which has compounded the region’s woes.
Osuman commended the formation of the Shekarau-led League of Northern Democrats, describing it as a step towards revitalising the North.
However, he warned against focusing solely on long-term political solutions, advocating for immediate actions to tackle economic and security challenges.
“We must prioritise economic empowerment, infrastructure, education, and security to address the North’s deteriorating conditions,” he added.
