The All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership has confirmed that consultations with stakeholders are still ongoing before announcing a new date for the much-anticipated National Caucus and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings.
The crucial meetings, expected to be chaired by President Bola Tinubu, were initially scheduled for September 2023 but were indefinitely postponed.
Other key attendees include Vice President Kashim Shettima, former President Muhammadu Buhari, past and present APC governors, and other top party figures.
Despite mounting concerns from party members and political observers, APC officials have remained tight-lipped about a rescheduled date.
In an interview with PUNCH, the National Secretary of the APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru, stated that the meetings would be called “as soon as possible.”
“On El-Rufai’s observation on the calling on the NEC, he is particularly correct. But that does not mean that NEC is the only organ of the party. There are other functional organs that are working for the success of the party,” Basiru said.
Speculations suggest the NEC meeting might hold later in February, but the party has not confirmed the rumours.
The National Legal Adviser, Prof Abdulkareem Kana, assured party members that the meeting would be held at an appropriate time.
“We are just trying to ensure the timing is right to have a committee that will involve everybody, including the president, his deputy, the party chairman, and others in government,” he stated.
The Deputy National Organising Secretary of the APC, Nze Chidi Duru, added, “No new date has been fixed. But I can assure you it is in the works.”
