In a fresh assault on Nigeria’s power infrastructure, armed assailants attacked the construction site of a new 330/132/33kV transmission substation in Obajana, Kogi State, on Tuesday night.
The gunmen destroyed a key 150MVA power transformer, dealing a blow to the government’s efforts to boost power supply in the region.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in a statement by its General Manager for Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, revealed that the attack occurred at 11:55 pm on November 12, 2024.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria announces that armed men invaded the construction site of its ongoing 330/132/33kV transmission substation in Obajana, Kogi State,” read the statement.
“According to reports from security personnel at the site, the assailants opened fire indiscriminately, causing the guards to flee.”
The damaged 150MVA transformer was set to play a significant role in the state’s power stability.
TCN has since launched an assessment of the damage in collaboration with the project contractor.
“This incident is part of a broader pattern of vandalism targeting transmission infrastructure across the country,” Mbah added.
The attack marks yet another instance of vandalism hampering national power projects, following a recent assault on the 330kV Lokoja-Gwagwalada line, where multiple towers were damaged, raising grave concerns about the security of Nigeria’s power grid.
