Aviation Unions Threaten Nationwide Shutdown Over Delayed Salary Reforms

Aviation workers in Nigeria have issued a fiery seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, over the government’s failure to implement a long-agreed salary structure for employees of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

In a strongly worded joint letter dated July 31, four aviation unions accused the ministry of insensitivity and betrayal, stating that the new pay framework was negotiated and finalised over eight months ago but has yet to take effect.

The ultimatum, which expires on August 7, threatens a complete withdrawal of services by all NAMA staff if no progress is made, a move that could ground air traffic operations nationwide.

“A seven-day notice of withdrawal of services from today… is hereby issued,” the unions declared, urging all NAMA clients to prepare for disruptions.

They lamented that “rank and file members” had grown increasingly restless and had repeatedly expressed their frustration in writing over the continued delay.

The letter was signed by leaders of key unions, including the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the National Union of Air Transport Employees, underlining the industry-wide scale of the protest.

With tensions at boiling point, the aviation sector braces for significant turmoil unless urgent action is taken by the government to meet workers’ demands.
