The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has soared across Nigeria, defying the federal government’s export ban intended to stabilise domestic supply.
Consumers have reported increases of up to 58.68% over the past year, with a 12.5kg cylinder now costing as much as ₦17,895 in some areas.
Small businesses and households are bearing the brunt.
“If prices continue rising, I’ll have to increase food prices, which could drive customers away,” said Abuja food vendor Adewale Ogunleye, who has reverted to firewood cooking to cut costs.
Experts attribute the surge to global market trends, infrastructure challenges, and rising production costs.
Economist Nathaniel Adebayo explained, “The freeze on exports hasn’t resolved domestic inefficiencies or reduced costs for suppliers.”
While the government explores partnerships with Chevron and ExxonMobil to boost local gas supply, the immediate relief for consumers remains elusive.
