In a seismic shift within Nigerian politics, the Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling a major reconfiguration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made at a rally in Asaba, where thousands of supporters gathered to witness the defection of key political figures from the PDP to the APC, a move that has stirred political analysts and the general public.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, alongside APC chieftains such as National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, welcomed the new members into the party.
Oborevwori, addressing the crowd, described the decision as a “movement” rather than a defection, citing extensive consultations with stakeholders in Delta and a deep sense of loyalty to President Bola Tinubu.
The governor emphasized that the move was made to ensure the best for the South-South state, further noting that all members of the Delta State House of Assembly, local government officials, and party members were on board with the shift.
The defection ends a 26-year period of PDP dominance in Delta, raising questions about the future of the opposition party in the region.
Okowa, in his remarks, reiterated that the defection was in the best interest of the people, marking a bold and patriotic decision that he believes will benefit the state’s political future.
