Djibouti’s Youssouf Elected New AU Commission Chair

Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has been elected as the new chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission.

His election took place on Saturday at the 38th AU Summit of Heads of State and Government.

Youssouf will serve a term from 2025 to 2028, succeeding Chad’s Moussa Faki Mahamat, who has completed two terms spanning eight years in office.

The Djiboutian diplomat secured victory over Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Madagascar’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs Richard Randriamandrato.

His leadership is expected to usher in new reforms and policies to strengthen the AU’s operations and regional integration efforts across Africa.
