DSS Threatens Legal Action Against AIT, Channels TV Over ‘False’ Reports

The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a legal threat against DAAR Communications Plc, owners of African Independent Television (AIT), and Channels Television over reports alleging that DSS operatives invaded the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday.

In a letter dated 17 February 2025, the DSS, through its legal counsel, Chief Ayodeji Adedipe, SAN, demanded a retraction of the reports and public apologies, warning that failure to comply within seven days would result in legal action.

The Service argued that the media outlets misrepresented its role, claiming that DSS operatives were invited by the Acting Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly to prevent a potential breakdown of law and order.

“By this publication, our client, which is a highly responsible and respected organisation, was portrayed as an irresponsible and reckless organisation that, in a Gestapo manner, invaded/stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly,” the letter stated.

The DSS demanded that the retractions and apologies be aired five times daily for three consecutive days on all broadcast and online platforms of the media houses.

A similar letter was sent to Channels TV, with the Service threatening both civil and criminal proceedings should the demands not be met.
