Nigerian football star Ademola Lookman has submitted a formal transfer request to Atalanta, accusing the Serie A side of betrayal and emotional mistreatment despite years of dedication and loyalty.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, the 27-year-old Europa League champion revealed that the club had reneged on a mutual agreement to let him leave if a fair offer came in, saying, “There have been numerous clubs approached Atalanta in the past, and I have previously always stayed loyal.”
Lookman claimed that despite his professionalism and behind-the-scenes struggles, the club is now “blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand.”
Reflecting on his contributions, he noted that “winning the Europa League and standing shoulder to shoulder with my teammates that night in Dublin was one of the proudest moments of my career so far.”
The Nigerian forward, who joined Atalanta in 2022 for €15 million, insisted that both he and the club had previously agreed the time had come for him to move on, stating, “The club were clear with me that if a fair offer came in, they would allow me to move.”
Describing Atalanta as a club that once “felt like home,” Lookman said he is heartbroken that it has come to this but added that he must “stand up for what is fair and right.”
He directly addressed supporters, apologising for the public nature of the dispute and expressing hope for a peaceful resolution, saying, “I hope to work together with the club to find an amicable solution for all parties.”
The forward was recently nominated for the Ballon d’Or and named CAF African Footballer of the Year, making him one of Atalanta’s most decorated and valuable players.
Despite his achievements, Lookman’s statement paints a picture of disillusionment and disappointment, adding that “there is now little choice but to speak out” after months of “broken promises.”
