A governance watchdog group in Jigawa State, Good Governance Advocates, has stepped forward to defend Hon. Ibrahim Usman Kamfani Auyo, the federal lawmaker representing Hadejia/Auyo/Kafin Hausa, insisting that recent media reports quoting him as alleging that the House of Representatives receives between ₦1 million and ₦3 million are misleading.
The group maintained that certain media outlets deliberately twisted his remarks for self-interest, creating a damaging narrative that was never intended.
Its chairman, Comrade Ahmed Ilallah, explained, “We studied the circulating video and understood all his words, which in no way breach protocol.”
According to Ilallah, Kamfani’s comments were not about the House being paid such sums, but about individuals who must pay professional drafters to prepare bills on their behalf: “money is being spent not to pay the House but to pay those who write draft bills for people.”
The group expressed regret that “some media houses deliberately twisted his words for their own self-interest,” warning that such misrepresentation could not only tarnish the reputation of the legislator but also undermine journalistic integrity.
Good Governance Advocates further cautioned that “changing these words for self-interest will not only demean the lawmaker but also his constituents,” stressing that it risks damaging the honour of both the National Assembly and Nigerian democracy.
The group therefore urged media organisations to promptly correct inaccurate reports and to ensure they verify original video evidence before circulating claims that could stir public mistrust.
It also reminded the people of Hadejia, Auyo, and Kafin Hausa that misleading narratives can weaken trust between representatives and their constituents if not challenged.
In conclusion, Good Governance Advocates appealed to Nigerians to remain cautious, to prioritise truth, and to resist the spread of distortion, which, it said, threatens both public confidence and democratic values.
