Hadejia Council Launches Discount Fertiliser Scheme as Lawmakers Mourn Former Colleague

The Chairman of Hadejia Local Government Council, Alhaji Ahmed Abba Ari, has officially flagged off the distribution of subsidised fertiliser for the current rainy season, promising significant relief for local farmers grappling with soaring market prices.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the chairman revealed that the council had received an initial allocation of 1,200 bags of fertiliser from the Jigawa State Government, with each bag to be sold at a discounted price of ₦28,800 – half the prevailing market rate –  courtesy of Governor Malam Umar Namadi’s intervention.

“This 50 percent subsidy shows the Governor’s commitment to supporting our farmers during these challenging times,” he declared, urging distribution committees at both local government and ward levels to ensure fair and transparent allocation.

The council’s Head of Agriculture, Alhaji Suleiman Makama, added that each of the 11 wards across the local government area would receive 100 bags, with an additional 140 bags reserved for large-scale farmers, and confirmed that two committees had been established to monitor the process in line with state directives.

In a separate development, the Hadejia legislative council suspended its sitting in mourning following the death of its former councillor, Hon. Umar Okasha, who represented the ‘Yan Koli Ward.

Announcing the adjournment, Council Leader Hon. Ahmed Hussaini expressed profound sorrow over the sudden passing, describing it as a “huge loss to the community and to the council.”

A special prayer session was held in memory of the late councillor, with officials praying for eternal peace for the deceased and divine strength for his bereaved family.
