The Jigawa State House of Assembly has constituted an 11-member committee to amend the 2024 State and Local Government Contributory Pension Scheme Law.

The request, contained in a letter from Governor Malam Umar Namadi, was read by Speaker Right Honourable Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin during a plenary session yesterday.

Majority Leader Honourable Lawan Muhammad Dansure, while moving a motion to amend the law, highlighted that the proposed changes would help address delays in pension payments.

“The tradition in Jigawa State is to pay civil servants their gratuities and pensions within three to four months of disengagement from service,” Dansure noted.

Other lawmakers, including Honourable Yahaya Zakari Kwarko (Fagam constituency) and Honourable Ado Yakubu Zandam (Gwaram constituency), echoed concerns over the difficulties civil servants face in accessing their retirement benefits.

Additionally, the House has proposed amendments to include provisions for Social Security Allowance payments to disabled persons.

Dansure emphasised that the update would allow for the registration of more beneficiaries and an increase in the allowance from N7,000 to a reasonable amount.

Following the first and second readings, Speaker Dangyatin referred the bills to the appropriate committees, with a directive to submit their reports within two weeks.
