The Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) may integrate the MuKaranta Hausa Literacy for Prosperity programme into the primary school curriculum.
This was revealed by the Executive Chairman of Jigawa SUBEB, Professor Haruna Musa, during a one-day end-line assessment and dissemination event, organised in collaboration with MuKaranta Literacy Resources Limited and Bono Energy, held on Tuesday at Tahir Guest Palace, Dutse.
Professor Haruna Musa expressed his satisfaction with the programme, stating that it has significantly improved pupils’ foundational skills, enabling them to learn how to read and write more effectively.
“We are in discussions with them on how the programme will be sustained and expanded to more local governments, as it has made a serious impact on our pupils,” he said.
Addressing the challenges faced by the programme, the chairman urged mothers and the Schools-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to take ownership of the schools, as the government is doing its best to provide all necessary learning and teaching materials.
He also praised MuKaranta Literacy Resources Limited and Bono Energy for their efforts, encouraging other partners to follow their example in advancing education in Jigawa State.
In his remarks, the MuKaranta State Programme Coordinator, Mr. Bashir Yakubu, highlighted that the programme had improved pupils’ literacy skills in recognising letters, with an increase from 2% to 92% within just eighteen months of intervention.
He further explained that the MuKaranta Literacy Programme was introduced to 198 schools, benefiting over 22,500 pupils during its eighteen-month operation in the state.
Mr. Yakubu also confirmed ongoing discussions with the Jigawa State Government and donor partners on the possibility of extending the programme’s duration.
