The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA), in partnership with UNICEF, has trained 170 Faecal Sludge Emptiers and other environmental workers to sustain the state’s open defecation-free (ODF) status.

Speaking during the two-day training, JISEPA Managing Director, Sanitarian Adamu Sabo, highlighted the importance of equipping participants with knowledge to ensure hygienic business practices and safeguard public health.

“The training aims to improve their business due to its paramount importance,” Sabo said.

“These individuals fill a critical gap in society, as their work ensures a hygienic environment in our communities.”

Participants included 27 local government WASH officials and JISEPA Operations Unit staff, who were trained to monitor and enforce sanitation standards consistently.

Certificates of participation were issued to attendees, serving as official recognition by the agency to operate within the state.

Sanitarian Sabo commended Governor Malam Umar Namadi for his support, noting that the initiative aligns with the governor’s 12-point agenda to sustain Jigawa’s ODF status.

UNICEF WASH Specialist, Dr Uba Lawal, reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting the state’s sanitation efforts.

“We commend the governor’s leadership in maintaining Jigawa’s open defecation-free status,” he remarked.

The training underscores the vital role of environmental sanitation workers in maintaining Jigawa’s reputation as an ODF state, ensuring healthier communities across the region.
