The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost another member in the House of Representatives as Amos Magaji, representing Jaba/Zango Kataf Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.
Magaji cited the ongoing crisis within the PDP as his reason for leaving, stating that the unresolved issues from the national to the state level had made it difficult for him to remain in the party.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read Magaji’s defection letter on the floor of the House during plenary, making him the third PDP lawmaker to switch allegiance to the APC in the 10th Assembly, following Chris Nkwonta from Abia State and Eriatheke Ibori-Suenu from Delta State.
However, the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, strongly opposed the defection and called on the Speaker to declare Magaji’s seat vacant, citing Section 68(1g) of the Nigerian Constitution.
“Members of the House are lawmakers and lawbreakers. While the law allows any member to leave the platform on which they were elected, it also spells out the consequences, which include losing the seat,” Chinda asserted.
