Nigeria To Boost Local Manufacturing Of Pharmaceuticals To 70% By 2030

Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, has outlined the Federal Government’s ambitious goal to boost local manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and medical devices to 70% by 2030, in line with the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain.

Pate shared the announcement in a video post on X on Sunday, emphasizing that the initiative also aims to ensure a significant portion of vaccines consumed in Nigeria is produced locally.

He attributed the progress of this initiative to the efforts of the Presidential Initiative’s National Coordinator, Dr. Abdu Mukhtar, whose work has garnered substantial investment commitments.

In addition, the plan includes a targeted increase in full-time employment within the life sciences manufacturing sector, which is expected to expand by tens of thousands of jobs.

The government has partnered with the Empower School of Health in Geneva to establish the Empower Academy Nigeria, a regional hub to train professionals in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The academy, set to offer certifications in collaboration with global bodies, will focus on advanced manufacturing, regulatory sciences, and quality assurance, ensuring that Nigeria aligns with international standards.

Pate also revealed that more than 70 new healthcare manufacturing companies are already working on large-scale projects to strengthen Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry.
