Nigerian Soldiers Foil ISWAP Assault, Eliminate 30 Terrorists in Fierce Gun Battle

Defence Headquarters has confirmed the neutralisation of 30 Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents following a heavy gunfight in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State.

Five Nigerian soldiers lost their lives in the operation, with several terrorists fleeing with injuries.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, the military disclosed that the terrorists targeted a special force unit stationed in Kareto, launching multiple assaults over several days.

“The attack resulted in the destruction of equipment, including a gun truck, three TCVs, and an excavator,” Buba stated, adding that an air-supported reinforcement team successfully pursued the attackers.

Sources revealed that the insurgents’ first assault occurred on 16 August, leading to the death of 18 soldiers, while six terrorists were killed in the ensuing clash.

A subsequent attack on Tuesday saw five more soldiers fall, but the military’s swift counteroffensive neutralised over 30 terrorists.

“The special forces had recently arrived at Kareto and were preparing trenches to enable the safe return of displaced villagers when the insurgents launched their attacks,” the source disclosed.

The Defence Headquarters commended the soldiers for their bravery and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the region.

This victory highlights the military’s determination to combat insurgency despite the losses endured.
