Opposition political groups have commenced efforts to form what they call the “mother of opposition alliance” to unseat President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, representing Ideato Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, disclosed that opposition parties are set to establish a formidable coalition, with or without the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Otunba Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson for PDP presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, launched the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also referred to as ‘The Alternative.’
He described it as a platform to rejuvenate democracy and galvanise opposition forces.
Endorsing the initiative, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) pledged to align with other stakeholders to create a strong front against the APC, while Chief Chekwas Okorie, founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), predicted a political realignment by mid-2025.
“PDP Failing as an Opposition Party” – Ugochinyere
Speaking in Akokwa, Imo State, Ugochinyere criticised the PDP’s leadership under Ambassador Umar Damagum, accusing it of being complicit in weakening the party.
He called for a “decisive battle” to rescue the PDP and re-establish a robust opposition.
“We are mobilising forces. If our elders cannot challenge this dysfunction, we will,” he declared.
Showunmi Launches NOMC to Protect Nigeria’s Democracy
At the unveiling of the NOMC in Abuja, Showunmi highlighted the erosion of electoral integrity, ideological bankruptcy, and dwindling voter confidence as reasons for the movement.
He clarified that the coalition is not a political party but a civic platform to engage stakeholders and restore faith in democratic processes.
CUPP and NCFront Back Mega Coalition
CUPP’s National Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, expressed support for the coalition, describing it as essential for dismantling APC’s “corrupt regime” and ensuring good governance.
Similarly, NCFront spokesperson Mallam Hamisu Santuraki revealed plans to spearhead the formation of a mega opposition movement involving credible figures across political lines.
Labour Party Seeks Greater Role in Coalition
Labour Party spokesperson Obiora Ifoh expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in 2027, urging Nigerians to support opposition coalitions aimed at ousting the APC and driving progressive governance.
