The Chairman of the Presidential Tax Reform Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has called on Nigerians to focus on the transformative benefits of the proposed tax reform bills, urging that a few contentious provisions should not obstruct their passage.
The bills, forwarded to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu, have sparked debates, particularly among prominent northern leaders who have rejected the proposals, citing regional disadvantages.
The National Economic Council (NEC), composed of the 36 state governors, has also advised the President to withdraw the bills for wider consultation.
However, Tinubu prefers that the bills progress through the legislative process.
Speaking during a Channels Television Townhall meeting on the Tax Reform Bills on Monday, Oyedele highlighted over 200 transformative provisions designed to address Nigeria’s economic challenges.
“These bills contain over 200 provisions that can transform our nation and set us on the path to prosperity,” he emphasised.
“We must not let one or two easily negotiable provisions hinder such a significant opportunity.”
Oyedele pointed out that over 90% of Nigerians support the reforms and explained that the contentious areas could be resolved through dialogue.
Among the key benefits, the bills aim to exempt low-income earners from taxation entirely and reduce PAYE burdens for middle-income earners, ultimately decreasing the tax burden for more than 90% of Nigerian workers.
“This initiative provides a rare chance to reimagine our tax system for the betterment of all Nigerians,” Oyedele concluded.
