The Nigeria Police Force has hit back at what it calls a “wave of disinformation” over the arrest of activist Omoyele Sowore, insisting his detention was lawful and devoid of political motives.
In a statement (Ref No. CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/483, dated 8 August 2025), the Force said Sowore was held over “credible, corroborated allegations” including forgery and cyberstalking, and was released on bail “within the 48-hour constitutional window.”
It dismissed as “false and grossly misleading” claims that he was tortured, stressing its “zero-tolerance policy” for inhuman treatment.
The Police explained that a viral image showing Sowore with a bandaged arm was “part of his personal belongings” before arrest, but an internal probe was ordered to determine how he had access to it in custody.

Twice, medical teams led by senior Police doctors attempted to examine him, on 7 and 8 August, but “access was denied by the suspect,” the statement claimed. His detention, they added, is underpinned by “a valid remand order” from a competent court.
The Force accused unnamed actors of seeking to “malign state institutions” through sensationalism.
In response on X, Sowore lashed out at Police spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi, calling him “one of the worst policemen ever recruited” and accusing the Force of rewarding “mediocrity, dishonesty, and shamelessness.”
He vowed that “this impunity must be stopped permanently,” setting the stage for an escalating war of words.
