President Tinubu Extends Customs Boss Adeniyi’s Tenure to Consolidate Reforms

President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension to the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, whose appointment was initially set to end on August 31, 2025.

The Presidency confirmed the extension in a statement released today by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the extension will enable Adeniyi to consolidate critical reforms currently underway within the agency.

“The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security,” Onanuga said.

The reforms highlighted include the ongoing modernisation of the Customs Service, the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.

Onanuga emphasised that the President acknowledges Adeniyi’s “steadfast leadership and commitment to service.”

Bashir Adeniyi was appointed Comptroller-General in October 2023, following his earlier stint in an acting capacity after the retirement of former CG, Hameed Alli.

His tenure has been marked by bold steps toward digitalising customs operations and streamlining revenue collection.

The Customs Service, a key government revenue source, has also ramped up efforts to improve border surveillance and clamp down on smuggling.

Tinubu’s administration has prioritised economic reforms and trade efficiency, with customs playing a central role.

With this extension, Adeniyi is expected to see through key administrative and operational transformations.

Analysts have welcomed the move, saying continuity in leadership could stabilise the reform trajectory.

The decision has sparked cautious optimism within trade and logistics sectors expecting policy consistency.
