President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Ministry of Justice to collaborate with the National Assembly to address concerns over the contentious Tax Reform Bills.
This directive comes amidst mounting opposition from northern lawmakers, governors, and public figures, who argue the bills threaten fiscal federalism.
The proposed legislation – including the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024 and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill – has sparked fierce debate.
Critics contend the reforms could centralise tax authority and disproportionately benefit wealthier states like Lagos and Rivers.
In response to the backlash, Tinubu, currently in South Africa, urged the Ministry of Justice to ensure “all genuine concerns” are addressed before the bills are passed.
The President’s stance follows protests by northern youths at the National Assembly, who expressed support for the reforms while lambasting critics as “enemies of progress.”
