In what the Education Minister has billed as the most ambitious scholarship overhaul in over a decade, Nigeria is rolling out major increases to student grants across all academic levels.
Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa told the world that scholarship amounts have been boosted by 50 per cent “across board”, meaning PhD candidates will now receive ₦750,000 annually, with undergraduates rewarded with ₦450,000.
The expansion forms a central pillar of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to steer Nigeria towards a $1 trillion economy by prioritising education.
The minister emphasised the reform’s focus on merit and equity, especially in STEMM and vocational disciplines, with new funds introduced worth ₦1 billion for each of two strategic scholarship streams.

A revised allocation framework guarantees fairness: 50 per cent of awards go to undergraduates, 25 per cent to Masters students, and 25 per cent to PhD scholars, with 5 per cent reserved for students with disabilities.
The scheme is expected to benefit over 15,000 students in total and will be overseen by a multi‑ministerial committee led by the Federal Scholarship Board.
With ₦6 billion budgeted for the 2025–2026 cycle, this is no token gesture – it is, as the minister put it, “a bold national investment in our youth, our future, and our collective prosperity.”
