Following a devastating tanker explosion in Jigawa State that has tragically claimed over 100 lives, Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep sorrow, pledging immediate federal intervention and calling for a thorough review of Nigeria’s fuel transportation safety protocols.

In a statement released by the Vice President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Mr Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima conveyed condolences on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the grieving families.

He prayed for Almighty Allah to grant them the strength to bear such an overwhelming loss.

“My heart aches for those who have had their families torn apart by this disaster,” Shettima said in his condolence message on Wednesday.

“This devastating incident has shaken us all to our core. The Federal Government stands with the people of Jigawa. We are mobilising all necessary resources to support the injured and assist the families affected by this calamity.”

The tragic explosion, which occurred in Majiya, has plunged the entire nation into mourning.

In response, the Vice President has ordered the immediate deployment of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide critical assistance on the ground.

“As we contend with this tragedy, let us also reflect on the importance of safety measures and public awareness to prevent such incidents in the future,” Shettima emphasised.

“Every life is precious, and we must do all we can to protect our citizens.”

Shettima also praised the swift action of first responders and medical teams, commending their efforts as an embodiment of the nation’s resilience and compassion.

“Their dedication exemplifies the best of our nation’s spirit,” he added.

The Vice President’s concern for road safety was highlighted just last week when he inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council (NaRSAC), urging members to align their strategies with global best practices to curb traffic-related incidents.

“Road safety is not merely a matter of policy but a critical part of the lifeline that connects the people of this nation,” Shettima remarked during the event, underscoring the importance of setting national road safety targets and fostering cooperation between federal, state, and local authorities.

As the country grapples with the loss of lives in Jigawa, Vice President Shettima’s leadership seeks to ensure both immediate relief and long-term safety solutions.
